What is the leash law in Michigan?

The leash law in Michigan requires all dogs to be held on a leash while in public. The law, which was enacted in 1919, also stipulates other requirements for dog owners and identifies fines and penalties for those who break the law.

The leash law makes it illegal for owners to allow their dogs to stray without a leash. The law specifically requires owners of female dogs in heat to restrain their pets. As an alternative, they can keep their pets within their property. The same law requires all dogs over 6 months old to wear a collar and be registered with the state.
