The traditional four major oceans are the Pacific, Atlantic, Arctic and Indian. In the year 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization determined and declared a fifth major ocean, the Southern Ocean, located near the southern pole around Antarctica.
The largest ocean on the planet is the Pacific ocean, which borders the western side of North and South America, and extends to the eastern side of Asia and Australia. The second largest ocean is the Atlantic, which covers the area from eastern North and South America to western Europe and Africa. The third largest ocean is the Indian ocean, followed by the Southern and Arctic oceans.
