Is freezer burn bad?

Freezer burn does not render food unsafe for consumption, but it can damage the texture and taste of food. Frost tends to cover freezer-burned cuts of meat, causing discoloration and dry spots on the meat tissue.
Avoiding freezer burn is possible by taking the right precautions. A tightly wrapped food item generally does not develop freezer burn, although it still can if the food is left in the freezer for too long. The dehydration that causes freezer burn is a result of water molecules within the food item forming ice crystals and migrating to the coldest area of the freezer to find the most hospitable environment.
