What is a French manicure?

A French manicure has a pale pink base with bright white nail tips. Contrary to its name, the French manicure is actually an American invention. In France, this manicure is referred to as "la French," according to SheKnows Lifestyles.
Jeff Pink, the founder of Orly International nail care products, created this manicure style in the 1970s. The nude base and white tips were versatile and easily coordinated with celebrities' wardrobe changes. When he took this natural nail look to the catwalks of Paris, it caught on quickly. Upon returning to the United States, Mr. Pink renamed it the "French manicure."
