What is the function of the rectus abdominis?

The rectus abdominis is a muscle located in the front of the torso that gives the body support during bowel movements and while coughing. This muscle also helps women deliver children and is activated whenever a person completes crunches or sit-ups.
The rectus abdominis is a large muscle that begins at the pubic bone and stretches up to end at the sternum. It is located inside the abdominal muscles, where it helps humans maintain proper posture. It can also improve a person's performance in sports that involve jumping or running. When exercised and if layers of fat are not covering the abdomen, the rectus abdominis gives the appearance of a six-pack.
