What is gallic acid?

Gallic acid is a type of organic acid found in various fruits, herbs and other plants. This phenolic acid is commonly used for pharmaceutical purposes. Foods that include gallic acid include blueberries, walnuts and apples.

Gallic acid appears to have antiviral and antifungal properties. The acid also has powerful antioxidant properties that are helpful in fighting oxidative damage to human cells. In cases of internal hemorrhaging, gallic acid is used as an astringent. Furthermore, this acid can be used to treat albuminuria, diabetes, psoriasis and hemorrhoids. Gallic acid is used in several inks and dyes. It can be extracted from gallnuts by oxidation.
