Gatorade is acidic, with a pH range of 2.9 to 3.2. According to dental experts, any substance with a pH value below 5.2 can cause the erosion of teeth enamel.
Researchers from the University of Iowa are looking into the role of sports beverages in the development of cavities, especially in children. The experiment involved dunking extracted teeth in several beverages, including Gatorade, Coke and Red Bull. The experiment revealed that Gatorade caused more enamel corrosion than Coke or Red Bull. The factors that are said to effect such results are the sugar content and acidity level of the beverages, though further studies are necessary.
