An evergreen shrub that thrives in warm weather, gardenias typically bloom from about mid-spring to well into the summer months. Gardenias are easily recognizable by their iconic white flowers and strong distinctive smell.
Also known as cape jasmine, gardenias grow solitary blooms, or occasionally small clusters, with between 5 and 12 petals, depending on the species. While they are most identified as having white flowers, there are yellow species as well. The fruit is used as a yellow dye for clothes and food and is used within traditional Chinese medicine to treat a fever. Polynesian people in the Pacific islands use the blooms for necklaces.
