Austin was founded as the capital of the Republic of Texas in 1839 by Mirabeau B. Lamar, who was the Republic's vice president at the time. It was named in honor of Stephen F. Austin, considered the father of Texas.
Many companies have their headquarters located in Austin, including Facebook, Google, Apple, Whole Foods and Sweet Leaf Tea. It is known as the live music capital of the world, featuring concerts in many venues all year.
