The Swiss capital is Bern. The city is situated within the Swiss Plateau in the Canton of Bern. Located approximately 12 miles north of the Bernese Alps, Bern is considered to be in western central Switzerland. Bern had a population approaching 130,000 in 2013.
Bern has a total area of about 20 square miles and an average elevation of 1,778 feet. The official language in Bern is a Swiss variety of German, while the main spoken language is Bernese German. Bern was founded in 1191 by the Duke of Zahringen and was chosen by the Swiss Parliament to be the Federal Capital of Switzerland in 1848.
