The capital of the People's Republic of China is Beijing. It has a population of 19,612,368 as of 2010 and is the second-largest Chinese city by urban population after Shanghai.

Beijing comprises 16 administrative county-level subdivisions, including 14 urban and suburban districts and two rural counties. It is located in the north of China and extends over approximately 16,800 square kilometers. The city is shielded by mountains to the north, northwest and west and is close to the Great Wall of China. Beijing is the nation's political, cultural and educational hub and is the home of the Beijing Capital International Airport, the second-busiest airport in the world by passenger traffic.
