The capital of Chile is Santiago, which is situated in Chile's Maipo Valley and surrounded by the Andes Mountains. It is the fifth largest city in South America.
To the south of Santiago is Maipo Valley, renowned as a hub of fine wine production. It is bisected by the Rio Mapocho, which moves westward and marks the northern border of the city center. Santiago has major monuments, museums and architectural sites within the Alameda region. At the heart of Santiago is Plaza de Armas along the Alameda, approximately five blocks south of the Rio Mapocho. French and British influence is evident in the Parque Forestal and Mercardo Central, respectively.
