Why did the River Nile flood every year?

According to Woodlands Resources History Homework, melting snow and heavy summer rain flowed down into the River Nile, causing it to flood. This heavy influx of water caused the banks of the Nile to overflow.
The River Nile is located in Africa, originates in Burundi and is the longest river in the world with a length of 4,160 miles. The river is fed mainly by Lake Victoria and eventually drains into the Mediterranean Sea. It flooded in a season the Egyptians called "akhet," which happened every year, between June and September, until the Aswan Dam was constructed in the 1960s.
The term "Nile" originates from the Greek word "neilos," which means valley.
