Why did the River Nile flood every year?

The River Nile is located in Africa, originates in Burundi and is the longest river in the world with a length of 4,160 miles. The river is fed mainly by Lake Victoria and eventually drains into the Mediterranean Sea. It flooded in a season the Egyptians called "akhet," which happened every year, between June and September, until the Aswan Dam was constructed in the 1960s.
