A person should get a complete blood cell count every year when she goes to the doctor for a regular check-up, says the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Her doctor may also recommend a basic metabolic panel, or BMP.
The complete blood cell count, or CBC, measures the levels of red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin and hematocrit, states the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. It also measures mean corpuscular volume.
A BMP measures chemicals in the blood plasma, says the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. These chemicals include blood glucose, calcium and electrolytes. The BMP also tests the patient's kidney function.
