Who discovered Brazil?

Pedro Alvarez Cabral discovered Brazil on April 22, 1500. He had been attempting to sail from Portugal east around Africa to India, but winds carried him much further west than he calculated.

Upon discovering this new land, Cabral immediately claimed it for Portugal and named it Terra de Vera Cruz, which translates to Land of the True or Holy Cross. Although he and his crew spent 12 days sailing along the coast, Cabral soon sailed off to the east in search of India. Amerigo Vespucci, Diego de Lepe and Vincente Yánez Pinzón all sailed into Brazil via the Amazon river before Cabral's expedition, however they made land fall to the north of Brazil. Thus, Cabral gets the claim to discovering Brazil.
