Europe is a continent made up of the western peninsula of the Eurasian landmass. The boundaries that separate Europe from Asia and Africa are the Ural and Caucasus Mountains in the east and the Caspian, Aegean and Black Seas in the south.
Europe is the second smallest continent after Australia, but it is the third most populous with 743 million inhabitants. The continent is composed of 50 countries and territories. Russia is unique among the European states in that it has territory in both Europe and Asia. Most of Russia's major cities are in Europe, while the region known as Siberia is part of Asia.
