Maryland is not a southern state but is referred to as a Middle Atlantic or Mid-Atlantic state. These states also include New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. They rest south of the New England states and north of the southern states.

Maryland occupies roughly 9,774 square miles of land and shares boundaries with Delaware to the east, Virginia to the south, West Virginia to the west and Pennsylvania to the north. Its water borders include the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. One of the original 13 colonies, Maryland was the eighth state to join the Union, achieving statehood on April 28, 1788.
