It is a nonprofit facility and operates as both a surgical and general medical hospital.

As of 2015, the MetroHealth Medical Center has approximately 861 beds and has an emergency department classified as a level 1 trauma center. The MetroHealth Medical Center was founded in 1837 under the name City Hospital and is one of the three health care systems operating in the area in addition to the University Hospitals of Cleveland and the Cleveland Clinic.
