New Zealand's climate ranges from warmer subtropical temperatures in the north to cool, temperate weather in the south. Mountain ranges act as barriers for strong western winds, leaving the country with a diverse climate.
Much of New Zealand experiences between 600 and 1,600 millimeters of rainfall throughout the year. In the north, the average daily temperature is 16 degrees Celsius while the south is much colder at 10 degrees Celsius. The coldest month is usually July, which is in the middle of New Zealand's winter. The warmest month is usually January or February, which is in the summer. Snow is common in mountain areas, although low-lying areas can experience snow along with frost in winter.
