The U.S. Virgin Islands are located in the Caribbean and include the main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas. The islands became an organized, unincorporated United States territory in 1954 under the Revised Organic Act of the Virgin Islands.
In addition to the main islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands include many smaller islands and have a total land area of 133.73 square miles. They are part of the Virgin Islands archipelago in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. The British Virgin Islands and the islands of Puerto Rico are also part of this group.
