Vermont is located in the Northeastern United States. One of the New England States, Vermont is bordered by New York to the west, Massachusetts to the south, New Hampshire to the east and Canada to the north.
Vermont was the 14th state admitted to the Union, reaching statehood on March 4, 1791. Nicknamed the "Green Mountain State," Vermont is the second most sparsely populated state, boasting more residents than only Wyoming. Occupying 9,250 square miles, Vermont ranks the 43rd-largest in geographical size. The capital of Montpelier lies in the north central region of the state, while the largest city, Burlington, rests in the northwest along Lake Champlain.
