What does George say he would be doing if he were smart in "Of Mice and Men"?

In the book "Of Mice and Men," George states that if he were a smart man, "I wouldn't be buckin' barley for my fifty and found." This means that he would be able to hold a job that pays more than $50 a month and free lodging.
