When was Giant Food Stores founded?

N. M. Cohen and Samuel Lehrman founded Giant Food Inc. in 1936. The first Giant Food store opened in Washington, D.C., and it was the first supermarket in that city.

Since its inception in 1936, Giant Food Inc. opened more than 150 grocery stores throughout Virginia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. Giant Food Inc. focuses on diversity in order to accommodate the diverse neighborhoods in which its stores are located. Giant Food Inc. accomplishes its goal of creating a diverse environment by routinely hiring a team of diverse associates and developing partnerships with Minority Business Enterprises. Progressive Grocer awarded Giant Food its Retailer of the Year award in 2014.
