Where does the giant Philodendron plant grow?

The giant philodendron plant, or Philodendron giganteum, grows natively in the Greater Antilles islands such as Cuba, Jamaica and Puerto Rico, down through the Lesser Antilles and into northeastern parts of Venezuela. It grows in jungle ecosystems that do not freeze.

The giant philodendron plant grows best in non-alkaline, fast-draining, fertile and moist soil. It tends to grow in shadier locations, but can grow in sunnier spots if soil moisture and humidity is high enough.

Giant philodendron outside its native location must not be allowed to get too cold. Some growers report having a giant philodendron plant die when temperatures dropped to 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
