Ginger root is a beige underground stem called a rhizome. The Ginger rhizome or "root" has been a popular spice and herbal medicine for thousands of years. It has a long history of use in Asia, India and the Middle East.
For more than 2,000 years, the Chinese have used the root to help with digestion and to treat upset stomachs, diarrhea and nausea. Ginger root is native to Asia and has been used as a spice in cooking for over 4,000 years. The ginger root has a thick, knotted appearance and sticks up about a foot above the ground with long, narrow, green leaves and white or yellow flowers.
