"In God We Trust" is centered above the depiction of the White House on the reverse side of a $20 bill. Prior to 1963, the reverse of a $20 bill contained the phrase "Redeemable in Lawful Money." Since 1928, Andrew Jackson has been on the front of the bill.
The U.S. Treasury notes that the first $20 bills printed with the phrase "In God We Trust" were produced on Oct. 7, 1964. "In God We Trust" became the official motto of the United States when a bill passed by congress was signed into law on July 30, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
