What is a golden gourami?

Golden gouramis are a color variety of Trichopodus trichopterus, or the three-spot gourami. They are medium-sized labyrinth fish characterized by two spots on the sides of their bodies, with their eye considered the third spot in their name. Three-spot gouramis also come in the color varieties blue and opaline.

Three-spot gouramis should not be kept with guppies, bettas or any other bright, long-finned fish. Males often see flashy looking fish as mating competition, regardless of whether they are the same species. They thrive in community aquariums with slow-moving, calm fish such as black tetras or any variety of corydoras catfish.
