Chicago Magazine lists 16 cardiologists among its "Top Heart & Blood Doctors in Chicago" as published in its January 2014 edition. In the field of cardiac electrophysiology, the magazine applauds doctors Jeffery Goldberger, Bradley P. Knight and David J. Wilber. In the field of cardiovascular disease, the list includes doctors Robert O. Bonow, Michael Davidson, Dan Fintel, Alain Heroux and Lloyd W. Klein. Physicians' areas of special interest include transplant medicine, coronary artery disease, gene therapy and preventative cardiology.
The leading cardiologists are affiliated with six Chicago-area hospitals, including Loyola University Medical Center and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Other hospital affiliations of the top doctors are University of Chicago Medicine, Loyola Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, Rush University Medical Center and Swedish Covenant Hospital. Both Loyola University and Northwestern Memorial are also listed by U.S. News and World Report among its 50 "Best Hospitals for Adult Cardiology and Heart Surgery."
Chicago Magazine publishes a biannual list of 395 specialist physicians and 100 general practitioners considered the best in the Chicago area. Doctors are peer nominated, and education, bedside manner, hospital appointment and board certifications all affect rankings.
Research company Castle Connolly Medical compiles the book "America's Top Doctors," which names about 6,800 physicians, which is about 1 percent of all American physicians, as the nation's best. About 400 of these physicians practice in the Chicago metropolitan area.
