What are some good color schemes for globe images?

Depending on the type of globe image or map that is being produced, several shades of a single color may be used to denote different regions. Blue is generally a good choice for water, while land masses should be rendered in a contrasting color such as yellow-green or orange.
Globe images that show only the shape and location of the continents commonly combine blue and green effectively. In this case, land masses are colored green, and water is colored blue. Land masses may also be shown in white.
In more detailed globes that show information such as topography or population density, a scale of five shades in one or two hues is a good choice to display the information visually. Contrasting colors such as green and red are best when only two hues are used.
