Succulents do well with very little water, which is why different types of cacti work well. Watering cacti on a normal schedule is bad for the plant, and gardeners only need to water them when the soil is brittle and dry. Cacti also need to be repotted every 3 to 5 years to thrive.

Other succulents, such as sedum, do best in bright, sunny areas of the garden. Gardeners can place these plants in rocky areas or crevices in the garden so all of the moisture drains out of their soil easily.
