Impetigo, which is a bacterial skin infection, must be treated with antibiotics, states WebMD. Mild cases of impetigo may be treated with an antibiotic cream or ointment, while more serious cases of impetigo may require the patient to take antibiotic pills.
Impetigo is caused by streptococcus or staphylococcus bacteria, according to WebMD. Both types of bacteria may develop in totally healthy skin, but the infection often develops as a result of other skin irritations such as insect bites, cuts and eczema. Impetigo often appears around the mouth as small red sores, which turn to blisters and break open. Normally the sores are itchy but are not painful.
