Why does grass not grow in the winter?
By Forinfos - 14/03/2026 - 0 comments
Most grass grows in the winter, however, it grows very slowly due to less sunlight, warmth and rain. Some grass my turn brown and lay dormant during winter, then flourish again in spring.
Grass needs a warm temperature to metabolize CO2, water and sunlight. The exact temperature needed may vary, depending on the kind of grass. The cold temperature of winter and the less than ideal growing conditions trigger grass to slow down, or halt growth. Certain grass may turn brown during winter and appear to die. The rooting systems in certain kinds of grass stop delivering nutrients in winter, causing dormancy.
