What is green belt land?

A green belt is land that is kept closed to development. The purpose of a green belt is to protect the habitats of wildlife, prevent urban sprawl and provide areas for forestry and agriculture.

Green belts provide a number of benefits. They protect the unique character of rural communities and provide city populations with an area of nature to enjoy. They enhance air quality and allow for the preservation of native plants and animals. Buildings cannot be erected in a green belt unless they are for agricultural purposes or sanitation. The limitations placed on construction in a green belt are rarely overturned.
