Greta Van Susteren is married retired trial lawyer John P. Coale. Van Susteren and Coale were married in 1988. The marriage is his third and her first.

Coale is a wealthy and high-powered attorney who achieved a great deal of notoriety for his solicitation of clients in India after the Bhopal gas leak disaster. Later, he achieved notoriety and wealth for his participation in lawsuits against tobacco companies and Union Carbide. In his retirement, he works as a donor and political consultant for his friends, some of whom include Sarah Palin, John McCain and Martin O'Malley. Van Susteren and Coale used to run their own law firm together.
