The groin is the area located on each side of the body where the folds of the abdomen meet the tops of the legs. The groin is in the same location for men and women. This area is frequently the site of pain or injury.
The most frequent cause of groin pain is a muscle, tendon or ligament strain or sprain due to overuse or trauma during physical activity such as sports, work or auto accidents. Another cause of groin pain is an inguinal hernia, which occurs when an internal organ pushes through the protective wall of a surrounding muscle. Other causes of groin pain include kidney stones, infections, and various types of cancer.
