The liver sits in the upper-right quadrant of the abdomen. As the largest solid organ in the human body, it has a variety of important functions.
The liver plays an important role in the digestive system. It synthesizes, stores and processes fats, which include fatty acids and cholesterol. The liver can manufacture proteins and blood clotting factors. Additionally, it synthesizes bile and secretes this bile into the digestive system to help the body fully digest the fats that a person consumes. Through bile secretion, a person can digest fats and absorb fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. The liver also plays a role in the elimination of certain harmful substances from the body.
