What is Groom Lake in Area 51?

Groom Lake is a salt flat in Nevada and was originally used as an Army Air Corps Gunnery Range. This location is just north of the Area 51 USAF Installation and is used for the Nellis Bombing Range Test Site as runways as of 2015.

During WWII, Groom Lake was chosen for the Army Air Corps Gunnery Range because of the remote location. The construction for a 5,000-foot runway began in 1955 at Groom Lake, complete with two hangars and temporary living quarters. In 1864, lead and silver were discovered in the lake, eventually leading to a company named Groome Lead Mines Limited to finance the 1870s Conception Mines.
