When is Groundhog day?

Groundhog Day falls on Feb. 2 each year in the United States. Legend states the groundhog comes out of its hole on this day to check for its shadow. If the animal sees its shadow, six more weeks of winter are ahead; if not, winter is over.
Punxsutawney Phil is the famous groundhog in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, that receives the most national attention on Groundhog Day. Each year on the day, the town hosts a celebration, during which Phil peeks out of his temporary home on nearby Gobbler's Knob to give his forecast. The verdicts of less famous groundhogs are recorded on this day as well. Regardless of the groundhogs' predictions, spring does not officially arrive until March.
