A group of gorillas is called a band or a troop. Gorillas usually travel in groups of six to 12 individuals led by the most dominant male. The group is made up of mostly females, their young and a few younger males.
As young males become stronger and age into silverbacks, they leave their family groups of origin in order to form one of their own. Gorillas are ground-dwelling apes that are found in the mountains, forests and lowlands across central Africa. There are four subspecies of gorillas: the mountain gorilla, the eastern lowland gorilla, the western lowland gorilla, and the Cross River gorilla. Due to poaching, disease and habitat loss, gorillas are a critically endangered species.
