Grow bananas by choosing a good location, planting at the right time, preparing the soil, watering the plant well, adding fertilizer and wrapping the plants during the winter. You need water, fertilizer, compost, well-drained soil, a pot, fleece and a trowel.
- Choose a good location
Plant banana plants in an area that provides shelter from wind. Make sure the soil is well-drained. If the banana plants are of a smaller species, plant them in containers that can be brought inside during the winter.
- Plant at the right time
Plant banana plants during the late spring. In order to produce fruit, the plants need 19 months with temperatures between 60 and 81 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Prepare the soil
Before planting, mix organic matter, such as compost, into the soil along with controlled-release fertilizer.
- Plant the bananas
Plant the banana plants in the prepared soil.
- Water the plants
Water the plants well after planting, particularly in the spring and summer. Reduce waterings during the autumn. In the winter, water only when the soil is dry.
- Fertilize the plants
Fertilize the plants regularly. Feed the plants a liquid fertilizer once a week. Reduce this during the fall and winter.
- Wrap the plants
During the winter, wrap the plants in fleece to insulate them from the cold.
