How do you grow beets?

Grow a crop of beets by preparing the seeds, choosing a good location, preparing the soil, planting the seeds, thinning the seedlings, and mulching and watering the plants. You need beet seeds, loamy or sandy soil, mulch and water.
- Prepare the seeds
Prepare the beet seeds by soaking them in water for up to a day to help them germinate.
- Choose a good location
Choose a location that receives either full or part sun.
- Prepare the soil
Use soil that is either loamy or sandy and has a high phosphorus level and a pH between 5.5 and 6.0. Add manure to the soil if the phosphorus level is low. Before planting, make sure the soil reaches a minimum temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Plant the seeds
Plant the seeds in a 1/2-inch-deep hole, making sure they are spaced at least 1 inch apart.
- Thin the seedlings
As the seedlings grow, thin them so that there are 3 inches between the growing plants. Because the plants have shallow roots, be careful not to pull up too many while thinning.
- Mulch the plants
Because beets need plenty of water to grow properly, mulch the plants to help the soil retain moisture.
- Water the plants
Water the plants regularly.
