Grow peonies by planting them in a good location, preparing the soil, installing metal peony rings, watering them thoroughly, adding mulch and deadheading the blossoms. You need peony tubers, compost, mulch, peony rings and water.
- Choose a good location
Choose a location for the peonies that receives full or part sun and is sheltered from wind. Do not place them by trees, shrubs or bushes. The soil needs to be loamy and well-drained.
- Prepare the soil
Prepare the soil by mixing it with compost and 1 cup of bonemeal.
- Plant the peonies
Purchase some peony tubers for a fall planting. Dig a 2-foot deep hole. Set the peony tuber in the hole so that the top of the tuber is just 2 inches below the soil's surface. Make sure that the eyes on the tuber faces upward. Fill the hole with dirt.
- Install peony rings
Install peony rings above the tubers to support the flower heads as they grow.
- Water the plants thoroughly
Water the peonies thoroughly.
- Mulch the peonies
Add a light layer of mulch to the ground around the plants.
- Deadhead the flowers
As soon as the peony blossoms begin to fade, deadhead them by clipping off the flowers to the first leaf.
