Grow goji berries by planting goji shrubs in well-drained soil after preparing the planting area, spacing the plants up to 6 1/2 feet apart, then fertilizing the berries once a year and lightly pruning the shrubs. Use general-purpose fertilizer, wire, a trellis or fence, compost, manure and pruning shears.
- Choose a good planting area
Choose a planting area for the goji berry shrubs that receives either full or partial sun. The soil of the site needs to be well-drained and rich. Place the plants by a fence or trellis as a support for the limbs.
- Prepare the planting area
Enrich the ground by working compost or well-rotted manure into the soil.
- Plant the shrubs
Plant the shrubs in the chosen site, spacing the plants at least 6 1/2 feet apart.
- Fertilize the shrubs
Every spring, fertilize the shrubs with a general-purpose fertilizer. Use 2 ounces of fertilizer for every square yard.
- Train the branches
Tie the branches with wire onto a fence or trellis to direct and train the branches' growth.
- Prune the plants
Remove all dead and damaged limbs in the early spring. Prune the branches low to encourage growth, and trim long or straggling branches. Cut away all awkward limbs.
