Grow raspberries by planting them in full sun, maintaining the soil at the right pH, preparing the soil with compost, watering the plants regularly, mulching the plants and pruning the plants. You need raspberry plants, compost, mulch, water and pruning shears.
- Choose a good location
Choose a location for the raspberry bushes that receives plenty of sunlight. The soil needs to be at a neutral or slightly acidic pH for the bushes to grow properly.
- Prepare the soil
Mix the soil with compost. Allow the mixture to sit for a few weeks before planting the bushes.
- Plant the bushes
Place the roots of the bushes in a container of water, and allow them to soak for 1 hour. Plant the raspberry bushes in holes that are 3 feet apart, giving them plenty of room to grow.
- Water the plants
Give the bushes 1 inch of water per week.
- Mulch the plants
Spread a thick layer of mulch around the base of the plant to keep the soil moist and prevent weed growth. Replenish the mulch throughout the growing season.
- Prune the plants
Prune the bushes down to 10 inches tall after first planting them. Prune them again in the fall. Cut away any awkward canes, leaving only half a dozen.
