Grow broccoli in a garden by planting it at the right time and in the right location, composting the soil, watering it regularly, fertilizing it and mulching it. You need broccoli plants or seeds, soil, water, compost, fertilizer and mulch.
- Plant broccoli at the right time
Because broccoli grows best in a cool climate, plant it in early spring or fall. If you are planting in the fall, do so at least 85 days before the first frost.
- Plant it in a good location
Plant broccoli in a location that receives plenty of full sunlight. The soil needs to be well-drained or sandy with a slightly acidic pH.
- Compost the soil
Before planting, add a layer of manure or compost, and work it into the soil.
- Plant the broccoli
Place broccoli plants between 12 and 24 inches from each other. If you are planting seeds, place them in a 1/2-inch hole, and cover with soil. As the seeds grow, thin them so that maturing plants are at least 12 inches apart.
- Water the plants
Water the broccoli well and regularly. Avoid getting the broccoli heads wet.
- Fertilize the plants
Fertilize the plants once a growing season three weeks after you plant them. Apply a high-nitrogen fertilizer to the soil if the leaves start yellowing.
- Mulch the plants
Apply a layer of mulch around the roots of the plants. Because broccoli roots are shallow, this helps to keep them cool.
