The red maple, or Acer rubrum, grows up to 1 to 2 feet a year. Red maples get up to 75 feet tall, and reaching their full height takes anywhere from 10 to 30 years, depending on genetics and environmental factors.

Red maples are hardy in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 through 9. They have a spread of 25 to 35 feet. Red maples are fast growers and prefer full or partial sun conditions with well-drained soil. They do well when pruned as a young tree in the late summer or early fall. Never prune during the spring or after the tree reaches maturity.
