Where is Guantanamo Bay?

Guantanamo Bay is located in Oriente Province in the Southeast region of Cuba, an island nation in the Caribbean Sea. Guantanamo Bay is approximately 400 miles from Miami, Florida.
Christopher Columbus landed at Guantanamo Bay in 1494, calling it "Puerto Grande." The area was first leased to the United States in February 1903 as a fuel station. Today, Guantanamo Bay is the location of a controversial U.S. military base, the Guantanamo Bay Naval Station. The naval station is now used as a detention center for detainees of U.S. wars, and the current government of Cuba views the U.S. military presence in Cuba as illegal.
