The body of water that lies south of Alaska is the Gulf of Alaska. An inlet of the Pacific Ocean, the gulf encompasses a surface area of 592,000 square miles.
The Gulf of Alaska is marked by numerous fjords and inlets, such as Prince William Sound and Cook Inlet, which are situated on either side of the Kenai Peninsula. A number of mountains arise from the shores of the gulf, including the St. Elias, Kenai, Fairweather and Chugach ranges. Found along the gulf are the ports of Seward, Anchorage and Valdez, which is the terminal of the trans-Alaska oil pipeline.
