Hammertoe is a foot deformity that causes an abnormal bend in the middle joint of a toe. When hammertoe occurs, movement of the affected toe can be difficult or painful. According to the Mayo Clinic, the tendons of the affected toe can tighten and cause a permanent stiffening.
Hammertoe is most likely found in the toe next to the big toe. The Mayo Clinic reports that the risk of hammertoe increases with age, and women have a greater likelihood of developing this condition. Another risk factor for hammertoe is having a second toe that is longer than the big toe.
