Is hay cheaper when you buy in bulk?

Buying hay in bulk is almost always cheaper than buying it in separate and smaller amounts. Requiring someone else to store hay between times of purchase can increase the cost of the hay. Additionally, making multiple purchases increases the total cost due to the extra transportation expense.

If sufficient storage is available, Equus Magazine recommends purchasing and storing a year’s supply of hay at once. This allows the hay purchaser to obtain the best bulk hay price possible. However, because hay sellers may prefer to sell in bulk, they may charge less for a large supply paid for at one time rather than making separate sales, even if the hay requires multiple deliveries.
